Helping Young People Discover, Develop & Deploy their Talents & Gifts
Discovery Initiative is a project based in East London which started in August 2008. It is a project that helps young people of all races, cultures and backgrounds, Discover, Develop and Deploy their Talents and Gifts, and by so doing making positive impact and adding value to their communities.
This is delivered through training, advice and information, arts and cultural activities, capacity building, education and teaching, events and workshops, organised sport and activities, regular meetings, skills development, facilitation, mentoring, coaching and various activities, fun and field trips. Discovery Initiative is currently sponsored by Transform Newham and Trinity Chapel, London (Charity No: 1084529).
Based on our weekly activities and engagement with the young people, we have come to see how beneficial mentoring is in the lives of the young ones. Mentoring provides direction, support and guidance on how they can succeed in every area of their lives. The unfortunate thing is that there are not so many who are making out time to mentor them. This is one of the reasons why Discovery Initiative is set out to be a solution to the ill of the society common among the young people. Examples of such are:
Absent role models and mentors
Lack of direction for young people
Idleness
Crime
Unemployment
Drug related issues
Rebellion
Gang culture
Thus our AIMS & OBJECTIVES ARE:
Addressing unemployment; Promoting education and learning; Training and skills building amongst Young people; Providing training and building skills; Working with young people; Developing role models; Promoting youth leadership and creating jobs and opportunities.
SHORT TERM IMPACT ON COMMUNITY
The immediate impact of our community work is two-fold. These are:
An equipped and well kitted centre to run our weekly programmes instead of the once a week sessions we currently run. This will keep our young people engaged, focused and empowered.
An established open counselling/mentoring facility where young people can come to meet our trained coaches and councillors to discuss and receive support on life issues.
Self-discovery of participants’ potentials and purpose, hence finding their place and role in the society and making a positive impact in their communities.
Creating jobs and opportunities with and for young people by harnessing their creative skill and talent.
Empowering and training our young people alongside our trained coaches to become mentors to other young people and also to their colleagues who need direction.
Reduction of crime, drug related issues, and gang culture etc among young people.
LONG TERM IMPACT ON COMMUNITY
For a lasting impact in our community, some of the areas we believe there will be evidence of the success of our work will be:
DI Fashion Training for young people at Stratford, Newham
DI Football Competition at Stratford, Newham
DI Art Exhibition Competition for Young People in Harlow
